Hi Reader, Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days start this coming Tuesday, October 6th, and run through Wednesday the 7th. Some early deals are already showing up, so you've probably seen a scanner or hard drive flash across your screen at a price that made you pause. Before you hit that button, there's one question I'd love for you to ask yourself. It only takes a minute, and it can keep a great deal from turning into a drawer full of regret. Here it is: what job do I need this to do in my collection? It sounds almost too simple to matter. Still, it's the first thing to go out the window when a price tag turns red and a countdown clock starts ticking. A big discount has a way of making every product look like the right product. Say you've got a few thousand slides tucked away in carousels in the closet, and a flatbed photo scanner shows up at a great price. Flatbeds are wonderful for prints. Plenty of them even include a slide holder, which makes it look like a smart buy. What the listing won't tell you is that you'll be loading a handful of slides at a time for months on end. For a collection that size, a dedicated slide scanner would likely get the job done a lot faster. The same thing happens with external hard drives. Buying one big drive on sale feels like crossing "backup" off your list, until you realize all your photos now live in exactly one place. Once you know the job is keeping a second copy safe, you might decide you need two drives, or one drive plus a cloud backup. That changes which deal is actually worth grabbing. A bargain that doesn't fit the job ends up costing you twice, because eventually you'll buy the right one too. So here's my offer for this week. Hit reply and tell me what's in your cart (or what you've been eyeing), along with a sentence or two about your collection. I'll give you my honest opinion on whether it's a good fit, and if it isn't, I'll point you toward something that is. You don't have to buy anything to ask, and I really do enjoy these emails. 📬 If you'd like to do a little homework first, everything I recommend lives in one spot on my Amazon storefront. Photo organizing supplies are scattered across a dozen different departments on Amazon, so having them gathered together saves you a scavenger hunt. My comparison articles go deeper on each category, too:
Good deals come around again, and Black Friday is only about seven weeks after this sale. There's no need to grab something just because the clock is ticking. Take a minute with that one question first, and you'll know the thing in your cart is the thing your photos need. Warmly, P.S. Our free Memory Makers Meetup is tomorrow, Friday, October 2nd, at 2 pm MDT. You can check the time in your own time zone here if you're not in the Mountain zone. It's a relaxed chance to talk photos and get your questions answered with other family photo keepers. Learn more or register here, and I'd really love to see you there. 😊 P.P.S. Want a heads-up about our community events about a week before each one? Click here and I'll send you the details and registration links about three times a month. You're never obligated to come, and you can hop in whenever the timing works for you. |
I help overwhelmed family photo keepers become memory preservation masters so they can enjoy their photos again and leave meaningful collections for future generations.
Hi Reader, Last week’s email was all about mystery photos and the names that slip away when nobody writes them down. This week, I want to make the writing-down part easy. 📝 If you’ve ever held a photo in one hand and a pen in the other, wondering whether you were about to ruin it, this one’s for you. Plenty of us grew up labeling photos with whatever was in the junk drawer. Ballpoint pens, felt-tip pens and sticky notes all made their way onto the backs of family snapshots, and I won’t tell...
Hi Reader, Somewhere in your collection, there's probably a photo of someone nobody can name. Maybe it's a young woman in a cloche hat standing next to your grandmother, or a row of cousins squinting into the sun at a picnic. You've likely flipped past it a dozen times, meaning to ask about it someday. October is Family History Month, which makes this a good week to pull that photo back out. 📸 For a lot of us, those chances showed up quietly, years ago. An aunt mentioned over Thanksgiving...
