Hi Reader, Starting this Sunday, families across Mexico and in many communities here in the US will set up ofrendas for Día de los Muertos. At the heart of every ofrenda are photos, usually tucked among marigolds and a loved one’s favorite foods. Plenty of churches also mark All Souls’ Day on Monday, November 2nd. However your family remembers its people, this is a week when a lot of us find our thoughts turning to the ones we miss. 🕯️ Our grandparents kept their people close in pictures. There was a portrait on the piano and a row of school pictures marching up the stairs. Somewhere along the way, a lot of those photos slid into albums and boxes, and later into phones. They’re safe there, but they don’t get looked at much, and the people in them don’t get talked about as often either. So this week, I’d love for you to bring one of your people back out. Pick a photo of someone you miss, and set it somewhere you’ll see it this weekend, even if it’s just propped against the sugar bowl. Then think about the story behind the photo. What were they like that day, and what would you want your grandchildren to know about them? If you’d like to share them with us, I’ve put up a post in our private Facebook group just for this. Share your photo and story here. Our group is private, so only members can see what’s posted, and nothing leaves the group. Sharing is completely optional, and simply spending a few minutes with the photo yourself counts too. I’ll be adding my own in the comments, and I’d love to meet the people you’re remembering. 🧡 Warmly, P.S. Our free Memory Makers Meetup is next Tuesday, November 3rd, at 3 pm MST. You’ll notice the time zone link looks a little different this time. Since the clocks change in the US and Canada this Sunday, I’m using one that’s set to the actual date of the Meetup, so it shows your correct local time no matter when you click it. Check the time where you live. It’s a relaxed hour to talk photos and get your questions answered with other family photo keepers. Bring the photo you’re remembering this week if you’d like to tell us about them. Learn more or register here. P.P.S. Want a heads-up about our community events about a week before each one? Click here and I’ll send you the details and registration links about three times a month. You’re never obligated to come, and you can hop in whenever the timing works for you. |
I help overwhelmed family photo keepers become memory preservation masters so they can enjoy their photos again and leave meaningful collections for future generations.

Hi Reader, Last week’s email was all about mystery photos and the names that slip away when nobody writes them down. This week, I want to make the writing-down part easy. 📝 If you’ve ever held a photo in one hand and a pen in the other, wondering whether you were about to ruin it, this one’s for you. Plenty of us grew up labeling photos with whatever was in the junk drawer. Ballpoint pens, felt-tip pens and sticky notes all made their way onto the backs of family snapshots, and I won’t tell...
Hi Reader, Somewhere in your collection, there's probably a photo of someone nobody can name. Maybe it's a young woman in a cloche hat standing next to your grandmother, or a row of cousins squinting into the sun at a picnic. You've likely flipped past it a dozen times, meaning to ask about it someday. October is Family History Month, which makes this a good week to pull that photo back out. 📸 For a lot of us, those chances showed up quietly, years ago. An aunt mentioned over Thanksgiving...
