Hi Reader, For most of my daughter's childhood, we lived far from both sets of grandparents. Four hours from one, eight from the other. Then we moved again and the distance grew to closer to a thousand miles. Every photo gift we ever gave got mailed or shipped straight from the manufacturer. One year, I got to hand my widowed Dad a gift in person instead of dropping it in a box. It was a small handcrafted booklet with pictures of my daughter in her various activities from the past couple of years. Music, dance, theater. Nothing fancy. He sat down in my husband's recliner and started turning the pages. Every single time he landed on a new one, he'd let out a long "ahhhhhh." Just that. Men of his generation didn't say much about their feelings, and that sound was as close as he got to telling me what it meant to him. When he reached the last page, he flipped straight back to the beginning and went through the whole thing again. I didn't design that booklet to be impressive. I designed it to be specific. His granddaughter, doing the things she loved, in one small book he could hold in his hands. That's really the whole secret behind a good photo gift. It doesn't need to be big, or techy, or take you all month to make. It just needs the right photo(s) and someone who'll recognize it. Warmly, P.S. If you've got a photo like that sitting in your phone right now, here's how to actually turn it into something they'll hold onto — no tech skills required, and Academy members already have access. |
I help overwhelmed family photo keepers become memory preservation masters so they can enjoy their photos again and leave meaningful collections for future generations.
Hi Reader, Last week’s email was all about mystery photos and the names that slip away when nobody writes them down. This week, I want to make the writing-down part easy. 📝 If you’ve ever held a photo in one hand and a pen in the other, wondering whether you were about to ruin it, this one’s for you. Plenty of us grew up labeling photos with whatever was in the junk drawer. Ballpoint pens, felt-tip pens and sticky notes all made their way onto the backs of family snapshots, and I won’t tell...
Hi Reader, Somewhere in your collection, there's probably a photo of someone nobody can name. Maybe it's a young woman in a cloche hat standing next to your grandmother, or a row of cousins squinting into the sun at a picnic. You've likely flipped past it a dozen times, meaning to ask about it someday. October is Family History Month, which makes this a good week to pull that photo back out. 📸 For a lot of us, those chances showed up quietly, years ago. An aunt mentioned over Thanksgiving...
Hi Reader, Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days start this coming Tuesday, October 6th, and run through Wednesday the 7th. Some early deals are already showing up, so you've probably seen a scanner or hard drive flash across your screen at a price that made you pause. Before you hit that button, there's one question I'd love for you to ask yourself. It only takes a minute, and it can keep a great deal from turning into a drawer full of regret. Here it is: what job do I need this to do in my...
