Hi Reader, Last week I asked you to think about one photo and whether there's still someone who could tell you the story behind it. If you're anything like most people, you probably sat there drawing a blank on how to even start that conversation. That's the part nobody warns you about. Knowing a story matters doesn't automatically hand you the words to ask for it, or the words to write it down once you have it. You've probably heard me ask this question a hundred times by now: what's the story behind the photo? Did something happen just before, just after, or just off stage that the picture itself didn't capture? Those are the exact questions worth chasing down. So here are a few prompts I hand my own community members when they hit this exact wall:
Pick just one prompt and answer it in a sentence or two, either in your own words or someone else's if you're asking a relative. The Photo Managers has put together a free Starter Kit for their One Photo, One Story campaign, and it has a whole worksheet built around prompts like these. Grab the free Starter Kit here if you want more to work with than what I've listed. Even three honest sentences preserve something that would otherwise disappear completely. Warmly, P.S. Our next Co-Working WorkRoom is tomorrow, August 21st. Bring your photo and your prompt and we can work through it together, if you like. Save your spot here. P.P.S. Want reminders about our community events about a week before each one? Click here. It doesn't obligate you to attend. It just sends you the dates, times, and registration link, about three times a month. |
I help overwhelmed family photo keepers become memory preservation masters so they can enjoy their photos again and leave meaningful collections for future generations.
Hi Reader, Last week’s email was all about mystery photos and the names that slip away when nobody writes them down. This week, I want to make the writing-down part easy. 📝 If you’ve ever held a photo in one hand and a pen in the other, wondering whether you were about to ruin it, this one’s for you. Plenty of us grew up labeling photos with whatever was in the junk drawer. Ballpoint pens, felt-tip pens and sticky notes all made their way onto the backs of family snapshots, and I won’t tell...
Hi Reader, Somewhere in your collection, there's probably a photo of someone nobody can name. Maybe it's a young woman in a cloche hat standing next to your grandmother, or a row of cousins squinting into the sun at a picnic. You've likely flipped past it a dozen times, meaning to ask about it someday. October is Family History Month, which makes this a good week to pull that photo back out. 📸 For a lot of us, those chances showed up quietly, years ago. An aunt mentioned over Thanksgiving...
Hi Reader, Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days start this coming Tuesday, October 6th, and run through Wednesday the 7th. Some early deals are already showing up, so you've probably seen a scanner or hard drive flash across your screen at a price that made you pause. Before you hit that button, there's one question I'd love for you to ask yourself. It only takes a minute, and it can keep a great deal from turning into a drawer full of regret. Here it is: what job do I need this to do in my...
